Never underestimate the power of a visual checklist or chart! A lot of times when we want our child, little or big, to complete a task we verbally ask them. Maybe we mention it in conversation… maybe we ask them over and over… maybe we give them an ultimatum… maybe we lose our cool!

Sometimes a verbal demand is overwhelming for a little mind. Often times, multiple tasks and steps to complete a goal seems insurmountable and overwhelming to a little person. By breaking down a request into small steps, this seems much less intimidating. Better yet, adding visuals for kiddos (even sufficient readers) can really aide in helping them categorize and prioritize what needs to be done, or what options they have to complete a task!

To save on paper waste in our family, we use clear paper overlays and dry erase markers to check off checklist boxes or circle options to complete a job! This is something that kids love to do independently and have control over. Checking off boxes gives them a sense of success and confidence to move forward with a task instead of shutting down.

Give it a try!
